Cleveland OH - The Black Women Commission of Cuyahoga County sent an email to the Team Bibb transition team on November 24, 2021, after reading an article on Cleveland.com regarding Tamir Rice. Rice was killed by a Cleveland Police Officer in November of 2014. Mayor-Elect Bibb is asking the Justice Department to revisit the case of Rice. According to the Justice Department website, on December 29, 2020, the Justice Department announced that the prosecutors reviewing the independent federal investigation into the fatal shooting of Tamir Rice on November 22, 2014, in Cleveland, Ohio, found insufficient evidence to support federal criminal charges against the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) Officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback.
The Black Women Commission of Cuyahoga County wrote Team Bibb a letter regarding the issue of secondary signage. The Black Women Commission of Cuyahoga and the mother of Saniyah, Marshawnette Daniels are requesting that Mr. Bibb reconsider the secondary street signage on behalf of 9-years-old Saniyah Nicholson. Saniyah was killed on June 21, 2018, by a stray bullet. Saniyah was sitting in the back seat of her mom’s car when gunfire erupted in the Cleveland Lee/Harvard Community.
The sign is to remind young people of how innocent lives are taken due to senseless gun violence.
In addition, the Black Women Commission requested for the Bibb Transition Team to revisit the proposed legislation that will hold parents accountable for the actions of their children.
The Black Women Commission stated, “Please let us know how you will be moving forward. All of our young people and women are vital to the success of this region, and every one of them deserves equitable treatment. The safety of all residents and visitors must be a priority of this new administration”.
After two weeks, the Black Women Commission of Cuyahoga County contacted Bibb via text message regarding the letter. Mayor-Elect Bibb referred the BWCCC to his media team. The Bibb Media team has yet to respond.
